Running with Mustangs: Equine Assisted-Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy with Court-Ordered Youth
Our highly effective curriculum for working with adjudicated and incarcerated youth is available for purchase!
Running with Mustangs is an Equine Assisted Clinical Practice program for use with court-involved youth. The program uses cognitive-behavioral theory and techniques
presented in an experiential modality. Problem solving activities with
horses, are designed to help youth learn important cognitive-behavioral
skills in a hands on, experiential setting that allows for “in vivo”
learning to occur. The manual includes a brief review of the rationale
for utilizing a cognitive-behavioral approach with this population, and
explains how skills based in this theory can be relayed to youth in an
innovative, experiential way.
The Running with Mustangs approach follows the philosophy of the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) and outlines a stimulating format in which youth can learn necessary skills through interactive, dynamic activities with horses. The manual lists specific cognitive-behavioral skills for the therapist and equine specialist to present and outlines numerous options for doing so within Equine Assisted Psychotherapy sessions.
The curriculum also includes an overview of our Natural Horsemanship component, our Vocational component, and our POETIX component. Together with the CBT skills of Equine Assisted Clinical Practice, these four components form our Gang Violence Prevention Program for working with gang-involved and/or incarcerated youth.

Cowboy Poetry, by Strides to Success
The Cowboy Poetry curriculum was created by Strides to Success after seeing a lack of resources for educational institutes to assist
disengaged students to reach their full potential in the classroom and in life. Disengaged learners struggle to succeed because they do not respond to the traditional approaches used in most school systems. Students benefit from a variety of learning styles, particularly when they can learn by doing and receive instant feedback on the why and how of a lesson.
The 12 week Cowboy Poetry curriculum has proven to be extremely successful with many students because each lesson accommodates all learning methods. The lesson plans contained in this manual have been piloted in many school systems with great success. Strides to Success intends for Cowboy Poetry to serve industry professionals as a great sales tool that can demonstrate the effectiveness of equine interactive education. As all of Strides curricula, Cowboy Poetry is wrapped around a strength based learning model that supports academic enrichment, promotes the acquisition of developmental assets™ and teaches positive life skills.
Marvelous Minis, by Strides to Success
Trying to convince educators that horses are wonderful teacher
s can sometimes be a challenge. The team at Strides Learning Center has found that if we can get one opportunity to provide services, the work speaks for itself. Your goal for this program should be to provide the schools with a unique experience that is developed to solve problems and attain results that cannot be met by other types of school-based programs. Decreasing challenging behaviors, building trust, developing positive relationships, and engaging students in the learning process are just a few of the goals that mini visitation programs can help achieve. As a result of the successful mini visitation, you can demonstrate how effective equine interactive education can be. The schools will view your center as a valuable resource that can design and implement programs that address unique challenges.
The Marvelous Mini Curriculum is a 10 week curriculum utilizing The Strides Learning Model with three components; academic standards, The Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets and character education skills. All lessons in the curriculum have been piloted through various school programs. Knowing that each program may work with the curriculum at a different level, the curriculum also includes modification to each lesson including; take it easy, Autism spectrum, Youth at Risk and Step it up. Each level will give a solution to modifying the original lesson to best fit your client’s needs.
Journey of the Spirit Horse, by Strides to Success
The Journey of the Spirit Horse 24 lesson curriculum was developed for students that are at-risk of failing in the traditional school setting due to
special needs, failing grades, negative behaviors, suspensions, low attendance or even expulsions. Journey of the Spirit Horse
is an exciting and innovative curriculum that utilizes the Strides Learning Model as its foundation of practice. The Strides Learning Model is interactive and wraps around academic standards, developmental assets and character education skills. These components make learning fun and successful. The curriculum is utilized to create an excitement about learning. The academic standards are focused on writing, listening and speaking skills. Since each state in the United States has their own adopted standards, we recommend that you acquire the Academic Standards that pertain to your state. The character education skills are taught through an interactive process that students can easily transfer into their own lives. In addition, the lesson plans are designed to teach character education that support the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets.
