Because I’ve been there. I took the leap in 2000, leaving an academic career in a big city to pursue my passion and my dream of living and playing with horses for the rest of my life.
I know from experience how excited and eager you are to make a success of bringing this work to the horses and people in your community and beyond. When I found this field (formally!) in 2001, I couldn’t wait to begin making a difference for the many horses who needed a new life and the people who knew they needed something more (and didn’t know it was a horse!).
Playing with horses and delivering services, I found,
were the easy parts.
The rest of the business, the day-to-day managing of people, resources, and money, was a lot more involved and complicated than I thought from the outsider’s perspective. And it has the ability to drag you down and take the spirit out of you if you don’t get control of it!
Almost six years after starting Horse Sense of the Carolinas, I’m pleased to report we have a small but self-supporting business helping people and horses of all shapes and sizes. We offer both mental health services, school programs, professional development and leadership development programs and more, and we’re loving it!
Yet there were many, many times I felt we were on the verge of collapse (or that I was!) because I didn’t know some of the fundamental things I hope to share with you.
Physician, heal thyself. The turning point, for me and for Horse Sense, was when I decided to ask for help. I asked for help from experts in other fields, and I listened to their wisdom. I put their advice into action, and I did the next right thing over and over again, until I got here, in the most fulfilling career I’ve ever had (and can ever imagine!).
With the help of the many coaches and consultants I’ve worked with, I’ve been able to move out of my comfort zone and not only survive, but thrive in ways I never would have believed possible.
But I didn’t do it alone. And you don’t have to, either.
